On Friday, December 27, the model and actor Dayle Haddon died at her daughter’s home in Pennsylvania, following reports of a carbon monoxide leak. The trailblazing beauty—who, later in life, was also known for her philanthropy—was born in Montreal in 1948, and by the late 1960s had embarked on a successful modeling career, regularly appearing in the pages of Vogue throughout the 1970s and ’80s photographed by the likes of Helmut Newton and Arthur Elgort. (Her most recent Vogue moment came just this year, as she appeared alongside Blake Lively in the Baz Luhrmann-photographed “The Heist of the Heart” fashion shoot that accompanied Lively’s September issue cover.)
In the 1990s, Haddon enjoyed a career resurgence as an outspoken champion of marketing fashion and beauty to mature women, most famously signing a long-term deal as an ambassador for L’Oréal Paris. In the 2000s, she was also named a UNICEF ambassador and founded WomenOne, which focused on educating young girls globally. Over the weekend, online tributes have poured in for the trailblazing talent, with many noting her warmth, generosity of spirit, and her consistent efforts to make the world a better place for women and girls. “Way beyond beautiful. Full of kindness,” wrote hairstylist Christiaan, while her fellow model Veronica Webb shared: “Dayle was a sweet, spectacular woman. Kindness was her hallmark and class was her calling card.”
