Michelle Buteau Billboard Music Awards Highlights

Michelle Buteau said the 2024 Billboard Music Awards (BBMAs) would be like any “good remix,” featuring the “same classic beat with a twist you could rock out to,” in her opening monologue.

She continued, “Now you’re probably asking yourself, why Michelle Buteau? Why would you get all this freckle-face magic? In a plus-size sequined suit for this amazing music award show?’ Because just like all of y’all, I love me some music. Honestly, music truly is one of the things that brings people together from all walks of life. What I’m saying is music is damn magic, OK?”

Buteau introduced the K-pop group Stray Kids as “joy pop” and between announcing award winners and performances throughout the night the comedian and actress interacted with stars like Zedd and Flavor Flav, asking them about what inspires them in their careers.

Taylor Swift topped this year’s awards, winning 10 trophies to bring her career total to 49 and making her the most decorated artist in BBMAs history.

Buteau, known for her comedy series Survival of the Thickest, spoke with The Hollywood Reporter earlier this year about working on the show and its impact. “I always dreamed of working on a show that was a Black show, that was a queer show, where all the directors were female,” Buteau said. “Women are amazing — period, point blank, end of discussion — and it’s so important to give people opportunities that they deserve and are very hard for them to get.”

Billboard Music Awards producer Dick Clark Productions is owned by Penske Media Eldridge, a joint venture between Penske Media Corporation and Eldridge that also owns The Hollywood Reporter.
